Present Continuous – Aprenda de Vez Como Usar!
O Present Continuous, ou Present Progressive, é um tempo verbal utilizado para expressar ações que estão acontecendo no momento presente ou no exato momento da fala.
Exemplo:
She is studying English (Ela está estudando inglês)
They are saving money to buy a new car (Eles estão guardando dinheiro para comprar um carro novo)
I am washing the dishes (Eu estou lavando a louça)
Como formar frases no Present Continuous
O Present Continuous é formado pela estrutura: Sujeito + Verbo to be (am/are/is) + Verbo principal + ING (gerúndio).
Para formar as frases no Present Progressive nós vamos sempre usar o Simple Present do verbo to be:

O verbo principal vai ganhar a terminação ING, que é o equivalente ao nosso gerúndio, que é quando o verbo termina com –ando, -endo, -indo, por exemplo, andando, correndo, partindo.
Exemplos:
Eat – Eating
Drink – Drinking
Learn – Learning
Rain – Raining
Para a maioria dos verbos basta acrescentar o ING ao final, mas também existem algumas exceções e regras no caso de alguns verbos, e veremos mais sobre isso mais a frente.

Frases afirmativas
Nas frases afirmativas nós usaremos a estrutura padrão do Present Continuous:
Sujeito + Verbo To Be + Verbo principal no gerúndio
Exemplo:
They are watching TV – Eles estão assistindo TV
Frases negativas
Para as frases negativas basta acrescentarmos o “not” depois do verbo to be.
Sujeito + Verbo To Be + Not + Verbo principal no gerúndio
Exemplo:
He is not going to my house – Ele não está indo para minha casa
Frases interrogativas
Nas frases interrogativas nós vamos apenas inverter o verbo to be com o sujeito.
Verbo To Be + Sujeito + Verbo principal no gerúndio
Exemplo:
Are they saving money to buy a new car. – Eles estão guardando dinheiro para comprar um carro novo?
Regras do Present Continuous
Como eu comentei anteriormente existem algumas regras que devemos observar no Present Continuous.
No geral basta acrescentarmos o ING ao final do verbo, mas existem algumas exceções e nós temos algumas regrinhas que se aplicam a alguns verbos:
1 – Verbos terminados em E precedido de consoante.
No caso dos verbos terminados em E com uma consoante antes nós devemos retirar o E e acrescentar o ING.
Exemplos:
Make – Making
Take – Taking
Come – Coming
Uma exceção a essa regra é o verbo to be:
Be – Being
2 – Verbos terminados em IE
Para os verbos terminados em IE, troca-se o IE por Y e acrescenta-se o ING.
Exemplos:
Die – Dying
Lie – Lying
3 – Verbos monossílabos ou dissílabos que terminam com CVC (Consoante – Vogal – Consoante)
No caso dos verbos monossílabos, que possuem apenas uma sÍlaba, e dos dissílabos, verbos com duas sílabas, que terminarem com a sequência Consoante – Vogal – Consoante (CVC) duplicamos a última letra e acrescentamos o ING.
Exemplos:
Cut – Cutting
Run – Running
Travel – Travelling
Exceções a regra:
Verbos terminados com w ou x não dobramos a consoante, acrescentamos apenas o ING.
Exemplo:
Snow – Snowing
Verbos com a primeira silaba tônica não dobramos a consoante, acrescentamos apenas o ING.
Open – Opening
Outras exceções a regra
Normalmente não usamos verbos que indicam estado no gerúndio.
Exemplos:
- Believe
- Love
- Know
- Like
Exemplos de frases no Present Continuous
It is raining today – Esta chovendo hoje.
I am not watching TV – Eu não estou assistindo TV.
They are cooking – Eles estão cozinhando.
Is he playing soccer? – Ele está jogando futebol?
She is reading my book – Ela está lendo meu livro.
We are not sleeping – Nós não estamos dormindo.
Are you going to school? – Você está indo para a escola?
I am not buying anything – Eu não estou comprando nada.
